Reynders is the first European Foreign Minister to pay the price for the Israel Foreign Ministry's new policy of actively opposing countries that support the branding of products.Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Netanyahu refused to meet Belgian Foreign Minister Didier Reynders for being among those pushing for branding Israeli products. The Israel Foreign Ministry vaguely acknowledged the move by explaining that such a meeting was never formally set due to schedule issues.
One action of the Israeli policy is "the suspension of diplomatic contacts with the institutions of the European Union and its representatives on this issue."
Reynders was the initiator of last month's letter signed by 16 European foreign ministers pushing EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini to support the branding of Israeli products. This letter was thought to be the one final act that swayed the EU to finally implement this infamous decision.
Following his letter, Israel's Foreign Ministry has decided to limit the diplomatic interaction with these 16 countries representatives in Israel and prohibit delegations from these countries from visiting Judea, Samaria and Gaza. In addition, as reported by ynet, Netanyahu recently instructed the Foreign Ministry to reassess the European Union's involvement in the peace process with Palestinians.
Last Tuesday, the International Christian Embassy held a special Christian Zionist symposium chaired by MEP Hannu Takkula and MEP Bas Belder. Among the invited guests was Father Gabriel Nadaf, an Israeli Aramean Christian who said that “this labelling of Israeli products is a further betrayal of Christian values in Europe, and it further weakens the Christian spirit in Europe.”
