U.N. Disability Treaty / News Round Up

Host: Jim Schneider

Air Date - November 28, 2011

Show Description:

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid recently said that the Senate would be giving consideration to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Treaty (UNCRPD). A vote could come any time this week.
The name of this treaty sounds like a worldwide step-forward for those who suffer from disabilities. However, if ratified, Article 7 of this treaty would establish a legal standard here in America that would override the traditional, fundamental rights of parents to direct the education and upbringing of their children with special needs. In effect, this treaty would undermine our national sovereignty.

America already has the best disability laws in the world therefore ratification of this treaty just so that we can have a “seat at the table” of any U.N. discussions regarding disabled individuals is simply unnecessary.

Other stories Jim presented included:

  • Senator John McCain is taking heat for communicating his desire to see a “truce” take place over the issue of abortion.
  • Jamie Fox calls President Obama “…our Lord and Savior during the 2012 “Soul Train” Awards.
  • A painting features President Obama posed as Jesus Christ crucified and is on display at a community college art gallery in Boston.
  • For the fourth straight year, President Obama omits any direct statement thanking God in his Thanksgiving address.
  • A Maryland state lawmaker has asked the F.B.I. to impound two voting machines to determine whether there was a malfunction or something nefarious taking place during the presidential election.
  • The “Heartbeat Bill” is fighting for its life in Ohio.
  • This Friday the U.S. Supreme Court will be meeting and discussing whether or not to take up one or more of several petitions before them that are challenging the Defense of Marriage Act.
  • House Republicans say they’ve done all they can in negotiations to prevent America from falling off the “fiscal cliff”.
  • Hillary Clinton to deliver remarks at a State Department event celebrating the 20th anniversary of the launch of an organization representing gays and lesbians in the State Department and other government agencies.
  • Madison, Wisconsin’s Freedom from Religion Foundation is challenging Buhler, Kansas, over a cross that exists in the town’s seal. The F.F.R.F is claiming that the cross violates the Establishment Clause of the U.S. Constitution.
