Costco: The Bible Is Fiction
B. Christopher Agee, The Western Center For Journalism — In most bookstores, the Holy Bible can easily be found among books about religion, spirituality, and other faith-centered issues. Shoppers looking for the Good Book in a leading retailer recently, however, found it among novels and works of make-believe.Pastor Caleb Kaltenbach reported finding the Bible listed as fiction during a trip to Costco last week, prompting him to initially assume the store made a mistake in labeling its merchandise.
Instead, he explained, “All the Bibles were listed as fiction. It seemed bizarre to me.”
After he was unable to find an associate willing to take his concern seriously, he took a photo of the label and shared it on the social media site Twitter. The prevailing response, he explained, was similar to his first impression.
“People are pretty shocked and upset,” he said, noting that he and many other Christians feel slighted by the store’s decision. “We are supposed to be living in an era of tolerance, but what Costco did doesn’t seem too tolerant.”
Kaltenbach said he usually takes such apparent prejudice in stride, though he felt compelled to speak out on this issue – especially since no Costco employees would respond to his complaint.
While Christians face far more injustice in other countries, he said “we do need to stand up for our faith and we need to be vocal about our concerns.”
Fox News reporter Todd Starnes attempted to get to the bottom of the controversy by contacting the retailer’s headquarters. While a representative blamed the issue on “human error,” declaring the problem “all fixed,” Starnes asked about the number of Bibles still included in the fiction section.
“Nothing to report,” she concluded.
Of course, a large number of Christians disagree, viewing this event as yet another brick in the road toward marginalizing their faith. » Full Article
