Partial Transcript: Iceland, land of volcanoes and Vikings, earthquakes and glaciers, hot thermal pools and vast wilderness vistas is the setting, too, for a mysterious presence that seems to reside beneath the slopes of the volcano, Laki. It is a presence that has endured throughout eons of time, a force older than mankind, one that seems to extend life, but only at a cost.
What do a sixteen-year-old Viking girl from the tenth century, a German geologist before the Second World War and, in the present day, a former Secret Service agent all have in common? The answer is: a very uncommon force in the remote and barren Laki chain that calls to these three people across centuries of time.
In the book, The Gods of Laki, author Chris Angus weaves a riveting tale of how in 1944, Nazi geologist Fritz Kraus is summoned to Carinhall, the hunting lodge of Hermann Goering located outside of Berlin. Goering tells Kraus of an audacious plan to win the war by recreating the effects of a 1783 eruption on Laki that will spread deadly hydrogen sulphide gas across Great Britain, kill hundreds of thousands, alter the world’s climate and cause deadly fogs that will interrupt Allied shipping and even prevent the invasion of the continent.
The Viking shaman, known as Amma, relates her tales of the spirit of Laki in stories that have come down to the present through the Icelandic sagas. Trying to separate myth from fact are the leaders of a conglomerate called IranOil, a German representative of the Catholic church with connections to Iceland that date back to the war, and Senator Shelby Graham who has had a lifelong fascination with longevity science.
