These men held to a historicist interpretation of scripture, which meant that prophecy was gradually unfolding throughout history. Most believers now are futurists, meaning that they believe prophecy will be accomplished in a short span of time set in the future. Despite this, it is unusual that so many theologians across several centuries seemed to agree with each other on the time frame, and that this pointed to 2015-2016 for the accomplishment of major biblical events.
