Trump commented after Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) shared a similar sentiment on Twitter.

“By the way, criminal masterminds, you’re destroying a statue on federal property that commemorates the military service of Andrew Jackson, a crime that carries a 10-year sentence under the Veterans Memorial Preservation and Recognition Act,” he wrote. “And you’re on tape. Lock ‘em up!”

William Jefferson Clinton would be the next president of the United States. George H. W. Bush was out. It was at that moment that another feeling struck me, a realization that has stayed with me over the decades. This realization was powerfully underscored with the Supreme Court’s disastrous decision this past Monday.

I suddenly realized that I was putting too much trust in our system. That I kept thinking that the expected change was just one election away. Or one more SCOTUS appointee away. Yet that magical moment never happened. Not with the Reagan presidency, and not at any time since -- at least, not on the level for which I had been hoping.

I live in Saint Augustine, the oldest city in America, and today I am deeply ashamed of the cowardly actions our elected leaders have taken as they have betrayed not only its citizens, but every ideal of freedom and liberty I was ever taught to believe America stood for. “Yes, I think the statues of the white European they claim is Jesus should also come down,” King, a former surrogate on Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders’s 2020 presidential campaign, wrote on Twitter. “They are a form of white supremacy. Always have been.”

King’s targeting of religious artwork comes as various activist groups have moved beyond tearing down Confederate statues and are now calling for the removal of other historical monuments.
