Synopsis: 2 Thessalonians 2:1-3 is confusing to many Christians. Many others are confident that it teaches that the church will go through the tribulation. But this confusion and false doctrine is largely traced to poor grammatical and exegetical analysis. If we translate and interpret this passage according to the common usage of petitions in Koine Greek, it makes a clear distinction between the coming/gathering (the rapture) and the day of the Lord. The rapture is given as a reason not to worry about the day of the Lord. The church is going up, not through.
