The game of checkers is a very black and white game. Moves are always diagonal. Strategy is limited. It tends to be a numbers game and if you get down, it is difficult to win. Overall, it is a rather simple game, designed to introduce the player to the concept of seeing an opponent’s next move and planning accordingly. Opening moves are always single spaces, in a single direction.
Chess, on the other hand, is extremely complex, filled with virtually unlimited strategies subsequent responses. Do you open with the Ruy Lopez? Or maybe the Italian? How about the Reti or the Queen’s Gambit to kick off the game?
If you are on the defense first in the match, you might consider the Indian, Sicilian, or the Caro-Kann strategy to counter. Your response to any move is limited only by your skill and imagination in this game.
In the game of life, the pieces are being moved around on the world's chessboard and the everyday Christian seems ill-equipped to respond. It seems that the Persians are playing chess and gaining the advantage, while we are still playing checkers. As a result, many cannot recognize the real and present threat of an approaching piece because they have bought in to deception, tasted the Kool-Aid or have sought to have their itching ears satisfied by conduct and or public displays that grieve the Holy Spirit.
Unfortunately, life is not a game and before you know it, they will be facing an eternal “Checkmate” that will end their game, and with it, the opportunity to make that one sure move in the game of life; surrendering their lives to Christ.
