Daniel stood alone in the midst of great pressure. As the Babylonian Empire partied, he stood before the king and read the handwriting on the wall. The pride, blasphemy, and idolatry of Babylon could be overlooked no longer; God would destroy them that very evening.

In a nation that rejects God, we must be willing to speak about the judgment that has come and is coming upon us and our country.

What should Christians do when the state becomes hostile, restricting the freedom of religion? Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego encountered this firsthand when the king of Babylon mandated that everyone worship the same idol. Many gave in, but they did not. Why?

They entrusted themselves to God’s sovereign hands. Their immediate well-being was less important to them than honoring the one true God. Though God saved them from the fiery furnace, He didn’t have to. They did what was right and let God determine the outcome.

Have you ever wondered what to do when the culture dictates certain behavior? If you are a Christian, this often results in a troubled conscience. What should you do?

Whenever possible, we should be in the culture, just like Daniel and his friends in Babylon. They worked for the king who had destroyed their homeland. But sometimes, we must resolve to take a stand and draw a line in the sand. When this happens, we should be prepared to face the consequences from a hostile world.

The book of Lamentations contains funeral dirges for the devastated city of Jerusalem. Tragedy enveloped the city, and Jeremiah wept over her demise. God had destroyed her, for the people had refused to heed the prophet’s call for repentance.

As we consider our own nation, we must remember that God can bless and destroy nations. Will we weep like Jeremiah for the sins which pile up among us – hate, violence, child abuse, and family divisions?

WHEN GOD JUDGES A NATION

Jeremiah had been warning Judah for decades. Since the people did not hear and their leaders did not repent, judgment came. They had bought into the pleasing lies of false prophets, simultaneously persecuting the prophet of God who bore the truth.

The lessons for America are many. While we pray for revival in our land, a nation can reach a point of no return. We do not know if we have reached it, and so we must continue to pray for our nation and speak the truth, remembering that God will always stand with His people.

Jeremiah was sent on a field trip to watch a potter working with his wheel and clay. This analogy illustrates how God shapes the lives of nations and individuals. He patiently uses circumstances and people to turn us into what He desires.

When we face difficulties, often we ask, “God, why is this happening?” But we must remember to trust the hands of the Potter. His way is best, even when we can’t understand it.

RECOGNIZING FALSE PROPHETS

With the judgment of Judah looming, Jeremiah, God’s true prophet, was surrounded by competing messages from false prophets. They spoke falsely about God, claiming that all was well and that God would not judge. The people of Judah flocked to these false prophets and clung to their lying “visions” and occult divinations.

Our age is filled with false prophets who deceive, as they hide their true motives of greed and fame. Will we be faithful prophets who champion God’s Word, confronting the idolatry and false teaching around us? Will we present the true gospel of sin, judgment, faith, and repentance?

Morally And Religiously, Our Culture Has Traded Light For Darkness.

When this occurred in the Judah, God overtly files for divorce in the book of Jeremiah. Judah was unfaithful, and she had run off after other gods. She had lied to herself, believing that the consequences of rebellion were manageable and that idolatry led to freedom. So they chose new paths over ancient paths.

In a time of inverted values, we can have hope. God is still seeking for those who will turn to Him in repentance. Let us weep for the sins of our nation, even as we reach out to the lost.
