Matthew 28:19 teaches us to baptize in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This is a collective reference to one Triune God. Also, we are not to grieve the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 4:30). The Spirit can be sinned against (Isaiah 63:10) and lied to (Acts 5:3). We are to obey Him (Acts 10:19--21) and honor Him (Psalm 51:11).

The personhood of the Holy Spirit is also affirmed by His many works. He was personally involved in creation (Genesis 1:2), empowers God's people (Zechariah 4:6), guides (Romans 8:14), comforts (John 14:26), convicts (John 16:8), teaches (John 16:13), restrains sin (Isaiah 59:19), and gives commands (Acts 8:29). Each of these works requires the involvement of a person rather than a mere force, thing, or idea.

The Holy Spirit's attributes also point to His personality. The Holy Spirit has life (Romans 8:2), has a will (1 Corinthians 12:11), is omniscient (1 Corinthians 2:10--11), is eternal (Hebrews 9:14), and is omnipresent (Psalm 139:7). A mere force could not possess all of these attributes, but the Holy Spirit does.

We can know that the Holy Spirit is indeed a divine person because He possesses a mind, emotions, and a will. The Holy Spirit thinks and knows (1 Corinthians 2:10). The Holy Spirit can be grieved (Ephesians 4:30). The Spirit intercedes for us (Romans 8:26-27). He makes decisions according to His will (1 Corinthians 12:7-11). The Holy Spirit is God, the third Person of the Trinity. As God, the Holy Spirit can truly function as the Comforter and Counselor that Jesus promised He would be (John 14:16, John 14:26, John 15:26)

The fact that the Holy Spirit is God is clearly seen in many Scriptures, including Acts 5:3-4. In this verse Peter confronts Ananias as to why he lied to the Holy Spirit and tells him that he had “not lied to men but to God.” It is a clear declaration that lying to the Holy Spirit is lying to God. We can also know that the Holy Spirit is God because He possesses the characteristics of God. For example, His omnipresence is seen in Psalm 139:7-8, “Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.” Then in 1 Corinthians 2:10-11, we see the characteristic of omniscience in the Holy Spirit. “But God has revealed it to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the man's spirit within him? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.”

Sin isn’t static. It will always demand more. It’ll always come back with more ferocity and power. It’ll always be there and it’ll always increase. And its ultimate destination is death—a spiritual and moral death, and for those who don’t know the Lord, an eternal death.

The most powerful thing we can do to combat sin is to stand on the territory that Jesus conquered. He broke sin’s power.

You’re either a slave to sin or a slave to righteousness. When we’re slaves of God, we have the freedom to be what God created us to be.

There is a plague that has infected 5 billion people. In all cases, it’s fatal. Death strikes everyone. Will your death be an entry point into heaven or hell?

In Romans 5, Paul compares and contrasts Adam and Jesus. Where one sinned and led all of humanity into darkness, the other obeyed God and leads us into light.

Will you die in Adam, still in your sins with the door closed to paradise? Or will you die in Jesus, with His righteousness opening the door to heaven?

Faith can destroy you. All the faith in the world can’t change lethal poison into medicine. Having faith in the wrong “Jesus” can lead you to your own destruction.

So it’s important that your faith is a true faith, a faith based on the true Jesus—a faith based on specific promises; a faith that understands both law and grace; and a faith that’s growing.

A little bit of faith in the true Jesus is better than absolute confidence in a false Jesus.

The slightest smidgeon of sin will banish you from the presence of God forever. Martin Luther understood this and spent hours each day confessing his sins. But he ran into a quandary:

• Sins, in order to be forgiven, had to be remembered.
• If sins aren’t remembered, they can’t be confessed.
• If sins aren’t confessed, they can’t be forgiven.
• And what if there are things that God considers sinful but you aren’t aware that they are sins?

Luther eventually connected the dots, and in this message, Pastor Lutzer takes us through the passages in the book of Romans that led Martin Luther to saving faith in Jesus Christ—and the start of the Reformation.

Paul’s instruction would have application to any situation that would involve work relationships that require a task to be performed under the authority or supervision of someone else—whether it be in an employee/employer relationship, or a student/teacher relationship, or as a volunteer in an organization or committee, or in military service. The command, in all such relationships, is to “obey in all things”. This leads us, naturally, to Paul’s words to “masters.” “Masters, give your bondservants what is just and fair, knowing that you also have a Master in heaven.” The same attitude of submission to Christ that should characterize a Christian employee should also characterize a Christian employer or supervisor. A faithful witness for Jesus Christ also must be exhibited in the way believing employers or supervisors treats those who work for them.

Pastor Andrew Russell preaches on Colossians 3:20-21. The duties of children and parents: Children, obey your parents in all things, for this is well-pleasing unto the Lord, v. 20. They must be willing to do all their lawful commands, and be at their direction and disposal; as those who have a natural right and are fitter to direct them than themselves. The apostle (Eph. vi. 2) requires them to honour as well as obey their parents; they must esteem them and think honourably of them, as the obedience of their lives must proceed from the esteem and opinion of their minds. And parents must be tender, as well as children obedient (v. 21): "Fathers, provoke not your children to anger, lest they be discouraged. Let not your authority over them be exercised with rigour and severity, but with kindness and gentleness, lest you raise their passions and discourage them in their duty, and by holding the reins too tight make them fly out with greater fierceness." The bad temper and example of imprudent parents often prove a great hindrance to their children and a stumbling-block in their way.

Nothing is untainted from self-interest and sin.

We all are born with the potential for great good. But we’re also born with the potential for unimaginable evil because we were all born with sin.

As we read the last part of Romans 3, Paul gives us a stinging indictment of human nature—a nature tainted with sin. A life filled with doing good for others, being completely selfless—even those good works are tainted and unsuitable for entrance into heaven.

But God has a plan, completely independent from anything we can do, that will save us and take away the stain of our sinful natures.

The general duty of the husband declared, to love his wife with a special, peculiar, conjugal affection, and to discover this love by a tender care over her, an affectionate regard to her, cohabitation with her, contentment and satisfaction in her, a patient bearing with her weaknesses, or prudential hiding of her infirmities, a cheerful supplying of her wants, a readiness to instruct and direct her, a willingness to pray for her, and with her; where true love is found these duties will be performed. A particular sin, which all husbands are to avoid in their conversation with their wives, and that is being bitter against them: not bitter in affection towards them, that is, cold and indifferent in their love to them; not bitter in expression towards them, speaking reproachfully to them; not bitter in their actions towards them, giving them bitter blows, which is contrary to the law of God and nature.

• Because we are blessed, we’re approved by God;
• If we’re unfaithful it nullifies God’s promises and calls into question His integrity;
• And lastly, the grace of God nullifies the judgment of God.

Pastor Andrew Russell preaches on Colossians 3:18-19. In the family, Christianity has signally displayed its power of refining, ennobling and sanctifying earthly relationships. Domestic life as seen in Christian homes is a purely Christian creation, and would have been a new revelation at Colossae as it is in many a mission field to-day. Domestic happiness and family Christianity are made up of very homely elements. One duty is prescribed here for one member of each of the three family groups, and varying forms of another for the other. The wife, child, servant, are to obey; the husband to love, the father to show his love in gentle considerateness, the master to yield his servants their dues. Like some perfume distilled from common flowers which grow on every bank, the domestic piety which makes home a house of God and a gate of heaven, is prepared from these two simples--obedience and love.

Religion can enable us to have a false sense of who we are. As a result of the Fall, we’re unable to see our own faults clearly—something that we all need to rectify.

In this message from Romans 2, Pastor Lutzer gives us six assumptions “religious” people tend to make—and why they’re wrong.

Until we are able to see our own hearts with a great deal of clarity, we can’t truly understand God’s grace. And if you think this is for everyone else, not yourself, then you are deceived.

There is no safe sin.

Sin isn’t static. It will always demand more. It’ll always come back with more ferocity and power. It’ll always be there and it’ll always increase. And its ultimate destination is death—a spiritual and moral death, and for those who don’t know the Lord, an eternal death.

The most powerful thing we can do to combat sin is to stand on the territory that Jesus conquered. He broke sin’s power.

You’re either a slave to sin or a slave to righteousness. When we’re slaves of God, we have the freedom to be what God created us to be.
