That God would open to them a door of utterance, that is, either afford opportunity to preach the gospel or else give them ability and courage, and enable them with freedom and faithfulness. Walk circumspectly, redeeming the time, because the days are evil, that is, dangerous, or times of trouble and suffering. Be ready always to give an answer to every man who ask you a reason of the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear.

Pastor Andrew Russell preaches on Colossians 3:22 - 4:1. Paul’s instruction would have application to any situation that would involve work relationships that require a task to be performed under the authority or supervision of someone else—whether it be in an employee/employer relationship, or a student/teacher relationship, or as a volunteer in an organization or committee, or in military service. The command, in all such relationships, is to “obey in all things”. This leads us, naturally, to Paul’s words to “masters.” “Masters, give your bondservants what is just and fair, knowing that you also have a Master in heaven.” The same attitude of submission to Christ that should characterize a Christian employee should also characterize a Christian employer or supervisor. A faithful witness for Jesus Christ also must be exhibited in the way believing employers or supervisors treats those who work for them.

Pastor Andrew Russell preaches on Colossians 3:20-21. The duties of children and parents: Children, obey your parents in all things, for this is well-pleasing unto the Lord, v. 20. They must be willing to do all their lawful commands, and be at their direction and disposal; as those who have a natural right and are fitter to direct them than themselves. The apostle (Eph. vi. 2) requires them to honour as well as obey their parents; they must esteem them and think honourably of them, as the obedience of their lives must proceed from the esteem and opinion of their minds. And parents must be tender, as well as children obedient (v. 21): "Fathers, provoke not your children to anger, lest they be discouraged. Let not your authority over them be exercised with rigour and severity, but with kindness and gentleness, lest you raise their passions and discourage them in their duty, and by holding the reins too tight make them fly out with greater fierceness." The bad temper and example of imprudent parents often prove a great hindrance to their children and a stumbling-block in their way.

The general duty of the husband declared, to love his wife with a special, peculiar, conjugal affection, and to discover this love by a tender care over her, an affectionate regard to her, cohabitation with her, contentment and satisfaction in her, a patient bearing with her weaknesses, or prudential hiding of her infirmities, a cheerful supplying of her wants, a readiness to instruct and direct her, a willingness to pray for her, and with her; where true love is found these duties will be performed. A particular sin, which all husbands are to avoid in their conversation with their wives, and that is being bitter against them: not bitter in affection towards them, that is, cold and indifferent in their love to them; not bitter in expression towards them, speaking reproachfully to them; not bitter in their actions towards them, giving them bitter blows, which is contrary to the law of God and nature.

Pastor Andrew Russell preaches on Colossians 3:18-19. In the family, Christianity has signally displayed its power of refining, ennobling and sanctifying earthly relationships. Domestic life as seen in Christian homes is a purely Christian creation, and would have been a new revelation at Colossae as it is in many a mission field to-day. Domestic happiness and family Christianity are made up of very homely elements. One duty is prescribed here for one member of each of the three family groups, and varying forms of another for the other. The wife, child, servant, are to obey; the husband to love, the father to show his love in gentle considerateness, the master to yield his servants their dues. Like some perfume distilled from common flowers which grow on every bank, the domestic piety which makes home a house of God and a gate of heaven, is prepared from these two simples--obedience and love.

In Colossians 3:10-14 Paul clarifies the theological understanding of our Christian life and how to live it affects our approach to life. For those who use computers or smart phones, an illustration might help. Our new life functions similar to a brand new operating system for a computer device. Each computer uses an operating device as the underlying software which provides the many basic functions of the computer. The applications or programs use this operational system to carry out the purposes of their applications. Our bodies are like that computer. It doesn’t change but only gets older. When we become a believer, it gains a new operating system. Our bodies, then, like a computer, runs by this new system. The old one can be reinstalled, but one can only operate by one operating system at a time.

Pastor Andrew Russell preaches on Colossians 3:5-9. As Christians concentrate on Christ, they learn to live a holy life. Christians do not become perfect immediately. Christians have a new nature but they still have old habits. Their old nature died with Christ. But evil desires still tempt them (James 1:13-15). Christians can now refuse to obey those evil desires (Romans 6). Christ’s new life in Christians has more power than evil desires (Romans 8:1-14). God created sex for a man and his own wife. All other sex is wrong sex. Lust is the desire for wrong sex. Greedy people want to satisfy their own desires. People can be greedy for food. They can be greedy for money or even for honour. Sin destroys people’s lives. Sin separates people from God. Christians are responsible for the way that they behave towards other people. Christians must not behave how they used to behave, there must be a change from inside to out.

Pastor Andrew Russell preaches on Colossians 3:1-4. Paul explained in this passage what had happened to the Christians at Colossae at their baptism. Now he explained how they should live this new life. ‘The things that are above’ refer to Christ and spiritual things. For the Christians, Christ himself is their new life (verse 4). So, Christ should be in the centre of their lives. They should concentrate on him. Christ rules the world with God. So, Christians should discover what pleases Christ. Verses 3-4 This world and our physical lives are temporary. They will end when Christ returns. Christ and ‘the things that are above’ are real and permanent. When a person receives new life from Christ, nobody can see this new life. Nobody can explain it. It is not a physical thing. It belongs to God. However, when Christ returns, Christians will be able to see their spiritual life. And every Christian will receive glory from Christ. So, Christians should now pursue the things that are above.

Here in this ancient city of Colossae, almost two thousand years ago, the same attack was being made upon Christian faith as we find in our country today. In this passage, beginning in verse 16 of chapter 2, we will discover the dangerous traps that await us on every side as we journey toward the goal of a personal relationship and ultimate union with God. We learn there are no new heresies. It is beyond the mind of man to invent new error. We find the same error, the same things that can derail the spiritual life, repeated cyclically through the centuries. These early Christians faced the same problem of spiritual error, a mish-mash of philosophy and misleading ideas, some from Jewish backgrounds, some from Gentile, some arising from pagan superstitions and some from the teachings of the Far East. We, too, face this same kind of mixture of wrong ideas in our world today.

Pastor Andrew Russell preaches on Colossians 2:11-15. When we come to Christ, we are identified in Him, circumcised, and baptized spiritually, so our sinful nature becomes less and He becomes more. This is not about a physical procedure or ritual; rather a spiritual, God-centered and God-led endeavor. We are spiritually circumcised in Christ. This means our sinful nature is cut off and removed in God’s eyes and we are set free. God has forgiven our trespasses and sins, removed our damming evidence that was against us and then cancelled our debt, and we are now released from our legal demands of the Law by our reconciliation in Him. Thus, we must continue our growth in Him as He nails our sins to the cross, and annuls our guilt bearing our shame Himself. Because of Jesus triumphant over sin, He bears the culpability of our sin; He will disarm our evils and the evils against us, showing their true shame, even as He will do in the world. We now have victory by the cross of Christ!

According to Paul, certain Christian teachers at Colosse promote a philosophy of religion that consists of human traditions and centres on the basic principles of this world. Paul responds to this theological error by restating two central claims about Christ on which this congregation's faith has been properly constructed: (1) Christ is the fullness of the Deity . . . in bodily form, and (2) he is the head over every power and authority. Therefore if Christ lives in us then we have everything we need - we are complete in Christ, Jesus.

Pastor Andrew Russell preaches on Colossians 2:1-7 and explains that Paul is not only addressing the Colossian Church but also the Christians in Laodicea. Paul begins by declaring that he wants believers to have their hearts encouraged and he wants every aspect of our very being, to the depths of our soul, to be encouraged in the Lord. It is the strengthening of every part of our person. This deep encouragement comes by being knit together in love. Love for each other is the way we can become knit together. It is important for us to understand that a church must be knit together in love or it is failing. Unfortunately, many do not see the need for gathering together. When we are knit together in love and stop selfishly consuming, Paul tells us great things are going to happen. Not only will our hearts be encouraged, but we will reach all the riches of full assurance of understanding and the knowledge of God’s mystery. We come together to attain a fuller understanding and a deeper knowledge of God. We cannot get to know God in isolation. We cannot become what God wants us to be as an individual and as a church when we are disconnected.

Pastor Andrew Russell preaches on Colossians 1:24-29 and we learn that Paul was a servant of God whose role was to present the hope of glory. There are three important aspects of Paul's ministry that are noted here. The first important aspect of Paul's ministry is that it involved suffering for the sake of the Gospel. The second important aspect of Paul's ministry is that the ministry of the Church is to present the Word of God in its entirety; the Word of God in its fullness. The third important aspect of Paul's ministry was that the Gospel was a mystery to the Jews but became a revelation in the person of Christ.
