Of course, Israel's internal and external security services work frenetically at preventing potential terrorists from carrying out attacks and finding fugitive attackers. Nevertheless, on the political stage officials work just as intensely discussing what kind of additional measurements could be taken.

High-ranking Israeli decision makers have decided to annul working permits for Palestinians whose family members have been involved in terror attacks. In addition, their exit permits to Jordan will be revoked. This decision was taken after the last attack in Gush Etzion. The perpetrator had told his Mother in advance that he planned to carry out an attack but she did nothing to prevent him from carrying out his threats.

Prime Minister Netanyahu has met with army officials and the Defence Minister to discuss possibilities of expelling families of terrorists to the Gaza Strip in the future.

Interior minister Silvan Shalom is about to submit a draft law that, if it is passed, would make it possible to revoke the citizenship of terrorists who have betrayed the State of Israel. The revocation would be possible even if the subject is abroad.

ISRAEL PREPARES POSSIBLE INVASION OF SYRIA

A TRUTHFUL AND BALANCED
PERSPECTIVE ON ISRAEL

Israel Today Staff — Israeli forces in the north of the country have for the past several months been laying plans for the possible small-scale invasion of neighboring Syria, reported Israel’s Ynet news portal.

According to Israeli army assessments, Iran is equipping Islamist forces in western Syria, including the Lebanese terrorist militia Hezbollah, with the intent of opening a new front against the Jewish state on the Golan Heights.

In the scenarios envisioned by the IDF, heavily-armed terrorist cells would infiltrate the Israeli side of the Golan and attack Jewish and Druze villages there, necessitating a strong Israeli response in Syria.

Another possibility is that one of the various jihadists groups taking place in Syria’s ongoing civil war could find itself in a desperate situation and launch a major attack against Israel in hopes of drawing the IDF into the fray.

There is also the matter of the large Druze population in south-western Syria. Al Qaeda-linked jihadists have been making advances on the Druze-controlled areas in recent weeks, and the many Druze living in and loyal to Israel have beseeched the Jewish state to intervene militarily on behalf of their brothers, should the need arise.

In our August 2015 issue, Israel Today explored the possibility that Israel’s borders could soon extend further east as it looks to protect the Druze and other non-hostile populations that are today threatened by the Islamists.

CAUSE FOR CONCERN: ISRAELI’S RIGOROUS COMPLIANCE WITH INTERNATIONAL LAW

A Truthful And Balanced Perspective On Israel

Tsvi Sadan, Israel Today — “Our overall findings are that during Operation Protective Edge last summer … Israel not only met a reasonable international standard of observance of the laws of armed conflict, but in many cases significantly exceeded that standard.”

That was the conclusion reached by the High Level International Military Group report submitted last week to the UN Human Rights Council. According to the report, this inquiry was unprecedented, and so was the access granted to IDF personal and information.

This group, made up of former chiefs of staff, generals and senior officers from the United States, Germany and the United Kingdom, among others, was intently focused on one of the most pressing issues surrounding modern armed conflict: “How civilian lives can be protected and military forces can fight effectively … in a densely packed civilian area.”

This challenge haunts not only Israel, but all Western democracies. Today, these nations face asymmetric armed conflicts where armies no longer fight armies, but must rather contend with paramilitary organizations that exploit international laws of war for their advantage. This yet unresolved challenge is a cause of severe headache for many statesmen and generals.

Contrary to the anti-Israel rhyme heard all over the world, these 11 experts appeared to be concerned that Israel was in fact going “beyond the required legal principles of proportionality.”

Though not saying so explicitly, they feared that Israel’s extraordinary efforts to avoid civilian casualties represented too high a standard, and would therefore hinder effective military action.

Rather than condemn Israel for alleged war crimes, this group seemed to be saying quite the opposite. Because of its fear of condemnation, Israel becomes an example of ineffective military operations that can have dire consequences not only for Israel, but for any other Western country fighting terror.

Though Israelis have long known it to be true, the conclusion that the Gaza campaign “was a legitimate war” carries extra weight coming from an independent international commission of inquiry.

It confirms the fact that “Hamas’s rocket attacks deliberately and indiscriminately targeted Israeli civilian population.”

It reiterates that “Hamas launched attacks against Israel from the heart of its own civilian communities in Gaza and positioned its munitions and military forces there also, including in schools, hospitals and mosques.”

These experts also arrived to the conclusion that “in general Israeli forces acted proportionately as required by the laws of armed conflict and often went beyond the required legal principles of proportionality, necessity and discrimination.”

And finally, just like the Israelis, this fact-finding commission is also concerned that “the measures taken [to avoid civilian casualties] were often far in excess of the requirements of the Geneva Conventions. They sometimes placed Israeli lives at risk. To an extent these steps also undermined the effectiveness of the IDF’s operations by pausing military action and thus allowing Hamas to re-group and replenish.”

This report is a ray of light trying to penetrate the thick prejudice encapsulating the UN. Based on past experience, however, it is unlikely that such reports will make so much as a dent in the world’s blatantly anti-Israel attitude.

David Lazarus, Israel Today — Young people from Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Yemen and many other Arab countries are turning to social media to tell the world that they love Israel.

The trend began, according to Al-Monitor, a popular pan-Mideast media outlet, when an Israeli Arab Muslim who served in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) wanted to convince other Israeli Arabs that the (IDF) are not an “army of evil” and that its soldiers are not as bloodthirsty as they tend to be portrayed in Arab propaganda films.

But instead of messages from the Israeli Arab audience he was targeting, he began receiving messages of peace and love from young Arabs all across the region.

M., who told his story to Al-Monitor on condition of anonymity, noticed that the Arab-Israeli political parties were putting up billboards protesting against recruiting Israeli Arabs into the IDF. “I saw the signs that were hung in Arab villages being run by activists of Balad and the other Arab parties under the banner 'The IDF isn’t worth it'. It infuriated me,” he said.

“I decided to respond to them on Facebook, so I made a page called 'The IDF is worth it', but instead of getting responses from the young Israeli Arabs to whom I was directing my personal campaign, I started to get photos and texts from young people around the Arab world. My jaw dropped,” M. told the website.

One young woman from Saudi Arabia posted a video holding a green Saudi passport against a street scene in Jeddah, saying in the background: “Good evening. I am a young woman from Jeddah in Saudi Arabia. I am a member of one of the better-known tribes of the Hijaz, and I am showing you Darajeh Square, a famous landmark in Jeddah. I’d like to send a message of peace and love to Israel and its dear citizens. I know it is surprising that a Saudi Arabian citizen sends a message to the people of Israel, but it is a basic principle of democracy that everyone is free to voice an opinion. I hope the Arabs will be sensible like me and recognize the fact that Israel also has rights to the lands of Palestine.”

A young man from Iraq posted a picture of his passport along the Tigris River. “I want to send a message of peace and love to the dear Israeli people,” he said. “I decided to shoot this video and tell you, ‘True, we are two countries that do not have friendly relations, but that doesn’t matter. I believe that the number of people who support Israel here will grow consistently.’”

Other young people send M. photos of their passports with handwritten messages in Hebrew, Arabic and English. It is always the same: “We love Israel.”

M. also engages the senders in private conversations. “After I got a video from Baghdad, I asked the person who sent me the clip what it was that caused him to express support for Israel.” The Iraqi man responded, "You’d be surprised. I’m not the only one. There are a lot of young people here who think like me. Everything that is happening to us here in Iraq — the killings, the terrorism, the veritable bloodbath — showed us that Israel has nothing to do with it. There are many young people... they are fed up with the religious wars between Sunnis and Shiites.”

Of course, there is also a growing pro-Israel sentiment among young Israeli Arabs, especially Christians. Ehab Ashkar, an Arab believer from Nazareth, had this to say when Israel Today asked him about the phenomenon:

"As an Arab who lives in Israel, it is a great honor for me to live side by side with my brothers the Jews. I bless them and love them and it is a privilege to tell them about my faith in their book, the Bible. There is a real way that we can live together in love, unity and peace, Arabs and Jews - through our prince of peace, Jesus Christ."

Massive IDF training exercise seen as preparation for possible deterioration in security situation

Geoffrey Grider, NTEB News Desk — In a sign of Israel Defense Forces preparations for possible destabilization of the security situation in the West Bank, the army’s Central Command called up 13,000 reservists in a surprise exercise on Sunday ordered by the new chief of staff of the IDF, Lt. Gen. Gadi Eisenkot.

Of the troops summoned, only 3,000 will actually have to report for reserve duty on Monday, the army said in a statement. For the remainder, the exercise was limited to the surprise call-up itself.

The troops will practice riot-control techniques, responses to kidnapping attempts and the handling of improvised explosive devices, the Ynet news site reported.

The two-day call-up will see the reservists training alongside troops from the air force, active duty infantry, combat engineers, and armor and intelligence units in the West Bank.

“This is the largest operational exercise in the past few years. I do not remember anything of this scale,” a senior army officer told Ynet.

The Palestinian Authority was given advance notice ahead of the exercise by the IDF’s Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) unit, which manages the army’s contacts with Palestinian authorities. COGAT officials told their Palestinian counterparts that the IDF was preparing for the possibility of escalation in unrest. source

HEZBOLLAH TELLS ISRAEL IT DOESN’T WANT WAR

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed that those responsible for
taking the lives of Kalangel and Nini would yet “pay the full price.”

Israel Today Staff — Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon on Thursday confirmed that he had received a message passed by Hezbollah via the United Nations that the Lebanese terrorist militia was not interested in further escalation of violence along the Israel-Lebanon border.

The message was transmitted a day after a cross-border Hezbollah attack left two Israeli soldiers dead and another seven wounded. The group said the attack was in response to last week’s targeted killing in Syria of a top Hezbollah field commander by an Israeli gunship.

By mid-day Wednesday, the situation seemed primed for a major explosion. But Hezbollah reportedly came under intense pressure from the Lebanese media and government, which were not at all keen for a repeat of the 2006 Israel-Lebanon war.

Ya’alon reiterated that Israel, too, would like to avoid another full-scale war, but Jerusalem has cautioned that it will not tolerate such overt threats to its security.

By Thursday morning, quiet had returned to the border region, but Israeli forces remained deployed on highest alert. The army also resumed drilling activities aimed at discovering possible Hezbollah terror tunnels running under the border.

Meanwhile, the two fatalities from Wednesday’s attack, Major Yochai Kalangel (25) and Staff Sergeant Dor Chaim Nini (20), were laid to rest by hundreds of mourning family and friends.

Kalangel, a decorate and much-beloved company commander, leaves behind a wife and one-year-old daughter. Nini was still in the midst of the mandatory military service all young Israelis must do following high school. Nini’s mother, Sima, was quoted as saying the following at her son’s funeral: “My beloved boy. I’ve lost you. You went to the army and came back in a coffin.”

While the latest border incident is seen as concluded, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed that those responsible for taking the lives of Kalangel and Nini would yet “pay the full price.”

Lea Speyer, Breaking Israel News (BIN) — Six Hezbollah terrorists, including a senior commander, were killed in an Israeli airstrike in the Syrian Golan Heights on Sunday, the terror group confirmed.

Hezbollah confirmed that six of its fighters were killed in the helicopter airstrike. Among the dead was 25-year-old Jihad Mughniyeah, son of Imad Mughniyeh, a senior Hezbollah commander who was killed in Damascus in 2008. Jihad Mughniyeah is believed to have been Hezbollah’s Golan District commander.

Mohammed Issa, 43, a commander; Abbas Ibrahim Hijazi, 36; Mohammed Ali Hassan Abu Al-Hassan, 30; Razi Ali Dawi, 27; and Ali Hassan Ibrahim, 22, are also confirmed to have been killed in the strike.

“A group of Hezbollah mujahedeen were martyred in a Zionist rocket attack in Quneitra, and their names will be revealed later,” a message on Hezbollah’s Al-Manar news channel stated.

Late Monday, it was also revealed that aside from the six Hezbollah terrorists, six Iranian field operatives belonging to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corp were killed in the strike as well.

“General Mohammad Ali Allahdadi and a number of fighters and Islamic Resistance (Hezbollah) forces were attacked by the Zionist regime’s helicopters,” said a statement on the Guards’ website. “This brave general and some members of Hezbollah were martyred.”

According to Hezbollah, the men were killed during what they said was a reconnaissance mission in the Mazraat Amal village in the Quneitra region. The strike targeted two Hezbollah vehicles that were operating close to the border with Israel.

Al-Mayadeen, a Hezbollah affiliated news outlet, reported that two Israeli reconnaissance planes were patrolling the area around the time of the strike.

“While a group of Hezbollah fighters were on a field inspection of the town, Mazrat al-Amal… They faced rocket shelling from helicopters of the Israeli enemy, leading to the martyrdom of a number of holy warrior brothers…” Hezbollah said in a statement.

Hezbollah fighters in villages near the border with Israel were put on high alert following the strike. In southern Lebanon and in Beirut, streets emptied and residents feared an escalation.

In response to the strike, Hezbollah vowed retaliation against Israel. “The attack on six Hezbollah members will be answered with a painful and unexpected response, but it can be assumed that it will be controlled so as not to drag into a wide-spread war,” a Hezbollah source told Lebanese newspaper Al-Safir.

The IDF has refused to comment on the incident.

As Israel’s former ambassador to the US, Michael Oren, stated on several occasions, Israel has proved to be the one place in the Middle East where Christians can not only live without persecution, but can actually thrive.

It is no secret to the readers of Israel Today that a growing number of Israeli Christians, in particular a large group from Nazareth, are responding by volunteering to serve in the IDF and fully integrating with Israeli society as loyal and productive citizens.

This trend is increasingly gaining the attention of the foreign media, though in most places it is still sadly overshadowed by claims that Israel oppresses all non-Jews in the region.

In an example of the more positive aforementioned coverage, The Wall Street Journal last week published a piece on “Israel’s Christian Awakening,” which concluded that the changing attitudes of local Christians constituted a “notable shift in the balance of power among religious groups in the Middle East.”

Among those cited in the article were Father Gabriel Naddaf, Israeli Christian Recruitment Forum spokesman Shadi Khalloul, and former IDF naval captain Bishara Shlayan.
