CHRISTIAN LEGAL GROUP URGES PUBLIC UNIVERSITIES TO RESTORE BIBLES TO HOTEL ROOMS

‘News From An Uncompromising Biblical Worldview’

“By removing the Bibles because they are religious,
you may have engaged in viewpoint discrimination.”

Heather Clark, Christian News Network — (Scottsdale, Arizona) A prominent Christian legal organization has sent rebuttal letters to two public universities that recently decided to remove all Gideon Bibles from their hotel rooms in response to complaints from an atheist activist organization.

As previously reported, the University of Wisconsin and Iowa State University were contacted by the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) last month after they received anonymous complaints surrounding the Gideon Bibles that are placed in the university hotel rooms.

The organization asserted that the presence of the Bibles at University of Wisconsin’s Lowell Center and Iowa State University’s Memorial Union violated the Establishment Clause of the United States Constitution, which states, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.” FFRF also contended that the Bibles signified the promotion of Christianity by a government-0wned university.

“It is a fundamental principle of Establishment Clause jurisprudence that a government entity cannot promote, advance or otherwise endorse religion,” one letter stated. “Permitting members of outside religious groups the privilege of placing their religious literature in public university guest rooms constitutes state endorsement and advancement of these Christian publications.”

Both universities responded by advising that they would remove the Bibles from all guest rooms, and Iowa State University said that the copies would be moved to the library beginning in March.

But this week, the Arizona-based Christian legal organization Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) sent letters to both the University of Wisconsin and Iowa State University to urge officials to leave the Bibles in place. The letters outlined that FFRF’s reasoning was flawed and not in alignment with legal precedent.

“In reality, the First Amendment does not require you to remove these Bibles, and by removing them, you may have demonstrated the very viewpoint discrimination and hostility towards religion that the First Amendment prohibits,” it wrote. “The Supreme Court and numerous other federal courts have repeatedly condemned efforts to exclude or restrict religious materials and activities as viewpoint or content discrimination, both at universities and elsewhere.”

“[C]ontrary to what FFRF implied, the Establishment Clause does not require government entities to dissociate themselves from everything religious,” the letters continued. “Indeed, the Supreme Court has repeatedly made it clear that the Constitution does not ‘require complete separation of church and state.’ Rather, it ‘affirmatively mandates accommodation, not merely tolerance, of all religions, and forbids hostility toward any.’”

ADF then warned that the universities, in heeding the advice of FFRF, could now be held liable for unlawful religious discrimination by generally allowing materials in hotel rooms while censoring anything of a religious viewpoint.

“[B]y succumbing to FFRF’s demands, you may have exposed yourself … to potential liability. Presumably, your guest rooms include a variety of printed materials, including magazines, phone books, and information about the campus and guest facility,” it explained. “By removing the Bibles because they are religious, you may have engaged in viewpoint discrimination, which is ‘an egregious form of content discrimination’ and a ‘blatant’ violation of the First Amendment.”

ADF urged both universities to restore the Bibles to the rooms lest they continue violating the Constitution.

It remains to be seen how officials at University of Wisconsin and Iowa State University will respond. » Full Article

PREACHER ARRESTED FOR CALLING HOMOSEXUALITY A SIN

Charged With “Using Homophobic Speech That Could
Cause People Anxiety, Distress, Alarm Or Insult”

Todd Starnes, FOX News & Commentary — An American evangelist said he was arrested and interrogated about his Christian faith after he was caught on a London sidewalk preaching that homosexuality is a sin.

Tony Miano, a retired deputy sheriff and former chaplain with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Dept., was charged with “using homophobic speech that could cause people anxiety, distress, alarm or insult.”

Miano had been preaching on a London street corner during the Wimbledon Tennis Championships with a ministry group called Sports Fan Outreach International.

He was preaching about immoral living – and cited homosexuality as an example of lifestyle choices that are contrary to biblical teaching.

“I never used any gay slurs,” he said. “You would never hear me using slang or discriminatory language against homosexuals or any other group. That would be contrary to my faith.”

At some point, the evangelist quoted I Thessalonians 4:1-2 – a passage of scripture that mentions sexual immorality.

“I talked about women addicted to romance novels, men addicted to pornography, people with lustful thoughts, heterosexual fornication and homosexuality,” Miano told Fox News. “When I mentioned that the Bible was clear that homosexuality is a sin, a lady walked by and she glared at me and hurled the f-bomb.”

Miano said the woman came back a short time later and began to videotape his sidewalk sermon. Then, she called the police.

“They were concerned about homophobic speech,” he said. “But I told them I don’t fear homosexuals. The language I used was not homophobic, as I was not promoting fear or hatred of homosexuals.”

Miano said he did not limit his remarks to homosexual acts.

“I did not speak solely about homosexuality as a form of sexual immorality but also about any kind of sex outside marriage between one man and one woman, as well as lustful thoughts,” he said. “All of these are considered mainstream Christian positions and have been taught and believed by Christians for thousands of years.”

Police took the retired deputy sheriff to a nearby jail where he was fingerprinted. Officers also took a sample of his DNA and then he was interrogated.

“It was very distressing to be arrested and interrogated for openly expressing my deeply held Christian beliefs,” he said.

According to a transcript of the interrogation provided to Fox News, the officers asked if he really believed homosexuality is a sin. He was also asked whether he would help a homosexual who requested a favor.

“I was made to feel that my thoughts could be held against me,” he said. “The detective also asked me if I thought I was 100 percent right in what I had done. I said yes.”

Miano said he would gladly offer assistance to a homosexual.

“The Christian faith is dictated by the two greatest commandments – to love the Lord your God and to love your neighbor,” he said. “As such, I am compelled to love all people. Had a gay come up and asked me for something to eat, I would have fed him.”

But what troubled Miano is the idea that a hypothetical situation could have been used against him in court.

“I was actually going to be tried for how I thought,” he said.

In an ironic twist, the officers made arrangements to provide the evangelist with a Bible to read in jail – the same book that led to his arrest.

“The same book I read from in public which resulted in my arrest, was now the same book the police were giving to provide me comfort,” he said.

Miano, who is a member of the Evangelical Free Church, has been open-air preaching for eight years. He said this is the first time he’s been arrested.

“It was a rather surreal experience,” the retired deputy sheriff said. “I’ve conducted many interrogations but I’ve never been the subject of one.”

Miano spent about seven hours in jail before he was released without explanation and without an apology.

Now back home in Southern California, Miano said he fears that what happened in Great Britain could soon happen in the United States.

“I believe that’s what our government is going to eventually do here,” he said. “I believe homosexuals or others who are sensitive to their point of view will be visiting churches to listen to what preachers say from the pulpit. And I believe that pastors will be arrested in their pulpits for teaching what the Bible says about homosexuality and other sins.”

Andrea Williams, the chief executive of the British Christian Legal Centre echoed those concerns.

“It’s clear that there is already a clamp down on freedom of speech where people publicly express mainstream Christian views on sexual ethics,” he said.

Watch the sermon that got the evangelist arrested. Police arrive at approximately the 25:40 mark:

MSNBC HOST MOCKS NRA WITH OFFENSIVE VERSION OF THE LORD’S PRAYER

‘GIVE US THIS DAY OUT DAILY DEAD’

Jason Howerton, TheBlaze — MSNBC host Martin Bashir on Thursday trashed the National Rifle Association and used the Lord’s Prayer to do it as he delivered an offensive “NRA version” of the well-known prayer.

“There is also a prayer breakfast at this weekend’s conference, presumably to include the NRA’s version of the Lord’s Prayer: ‘Thy kingdom come, help me keep my military-style gun. Give us this day our daily dead,’ and other various phrases like that,” Bashir mocked.

Watch the video below via MSNBC:

“This is not a freak organization,” the MSNBC host added. “You describe Ted Nugent in the way you do, and some of these speakers, and yet they are paid to attend, there are large numbers who will be hearing this. Yet they spew this kind of venom about an issue that is as saddening and shockingly disturbing for us all after what happened in Newtown and all the other massacres that we reflect on.”

Mother Jones’ David Corn went on to accuse the NRA of “exploitation” and just in it for the money.

“The NRA, which once was kind of legitimate in terms of its public policy positions…now they get out there and it’s delusional, it’s conspiracy theories,” he said. “It’s close to Alex Jones type stuff.”

Bashir also claimed that the NRA doesn’t “represent” real gun owners in America, they merely represent the gun industry. » Full Article

College Shuts Down Informal Dorm Room Bible Study

News From An Uncompromising Biblical Worldview

Jesus Speaking to His Followers...
If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you. If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.. ~ John 15:18,19

Heather Clark, Christian News Network — (Winter Park, Florida) A college in Florida recently shut down an informal Bible study being held by several students in a dorm room.

According to reports, four students at Rollins College in Winter Park gathered together last week to read and study the Bible. However, when a hall assistant passed through the area and saw the students, they asked the person leading the study to step aside.

“He was told they were no longer allowed inside the dorm — even with the express consent of the students to do Bible studies,” InterVarsity’s national field director Greg Jao told reporter Todd Starnes. “They said it was because InterVarsity was no longer a registered student group on campus.”

“It was really sad,” one of the four stated. “One of the students in our group called it ‘frightening.’”

However, college officials state that there is misunderstanding over the matter, as no organization is permitted to meet in the commons area.

“No group is allowed to hold meetings in the common space of residence halls,” they explained. “A fraternity was recently in violation of this as well, and they were asked to meet elsewhere – so it was not just InterVarsity.”

But Jao said that students should be able to study the Bible together informally as the gathering was not an official InterVarsity event.

“We pointed out that Christian students holding a Bible study is a little bit different than a fraternity sponsoring a kegger in a dorm,” he said. “If students want to have a Bible study, they should be free to do so.”

Prior to the incident, InterVarsity had been de-recognized at the college after being told that it had violated the school’s non-discrimination policy because it required that its leaders be Christians.

“The nondiscrimination policy is turning into an exclusionary policy in their hands and we’re hoping the college will see the irony in what’s happening,” Jao stated.

The college states that the students have been given rights to use the chapel on campus, but InterVarsity says that because they have been re-recognized, they have uncertainties about whether they will really be allowed to meet there.

Other groups around the country have been facing similar challenges. As previously reported, a Christian club at the University of Michigan was recently ousted from campus for refusing to change its constitution, which requires that its leaders be Christians. InterVarsity Christian Fellowship states that it was informed by campus officials that its policies conflicted with the university’s policies, which prohibit discrimination.

Last year, numerous Christian groups at Vanderbilt University in Tennessee likewise faced opposition from administration for limiting its leadership to fellow Christians. Fifteen clubs lost recognition over their refusal to comply with the school’s all-comers policy.

“With decisions like this, it makes the claim that whatever group is being removed off campus isn’t worthy of having that voice,” a Rollins College student told reporters. “They are not valued by the college.” » Full Article

New Jersey Congressman Blasts Biblical Creation, Proposes National ‘Darwin Day’ Holiday

News From An Uncompromising Biblical Worldview

New Jersey Representative Rush Holt, Democrat

Heather Clark, Christian News Network — (Washington, DC) A New Jersey Congressman has proposed a bill in the House of Representatives to designate February 12th as national Darwin Day.

Representative Rush Holt, a Democrat and a professing Quaker, recently submitted the proposal to Congress as a way to honor Darwin, who he calls “an amazingly creative man.”

“Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution by the mechanism of natural selection, together with the monumental amount of scientific evidence he compiled to support it, provides humanity with a logical and intellectually compelling explanation for the diversity of life on Earth,” he wrote in the text of the bill. “[T]he validity of Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection is further strongly supported by the modern understanding of the science of genetics.”

“[I]t has been the human curiosity and ingenuity exemplified by Darwin that has promoted new scientific discoveries that have helped humanity solve many problems and improve living conditions,” he continued. “[T]he advancement of science must be protected from those unconcerned with the adverse impacts of global warming and climate change.”

Holt then takes aim at Biblical creation as he outlines his belief that “the teaching of creationism in some public schools compromises the scientific and academic integrity of the United States education systems.”

“Charles Darwin is a worthy symbol of scientific advancement on which to focus and around which to build a global celebration of science and humanity intended to promote a common bond among all of Earth’s peoples,” he said. “Whereas February 12, 2013, is the anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin in 1809 and would be an appropriate date to designate as Darwin Day, now, therefore, be it resolved that the House of Representatives (1) supports the designation of Darwin Day; and (2) recognizes Charles Darwin as a worthy symbol on which to celebrate the achievements of reason, science, and the advancement of human knowledge.”

The bill was referred to the Congressional Committee on Science, Space and Technology for consideration. » Read More

Atheists to Distribute ‘An X-Rated Book’ to Public School Kids to Combat Christians’ Bible Give Away

Jesus Speaking to His Followers...
If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you. If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you. ~ John 15:18,19

Billy Hallowell, TheBlaze — Atheists in Orange County, Fla., are taking the Bible to task. Central Florida Freethought (CFF), a local, secular group associated with the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF), plans to distribute atheist books in public schools after a religious organization began giving away free Bibles in 11 of the county’s public schools. At least one of the literary works, “An X-Rated Book: Sex & Obscenity in the Bible,” is sure to raise eyebrows.

David Williamson, a member of the CFF, believes that allowing the Bibles in schools is wrong, so to combat the practice his organization is planning to distribute its own literature — material that affirms atheist, agnostic and “free-thinking” themes.

“The county has invited people in now to do this, and what we need to do is put the views of the biblical creationists into perspective with our perspective,” said Williamson. ”It’s not tit for tat. Our effort is to ensure the county realizes this is the wrong policy.”

Earlier this week, CFF put out a press release outlining its plans to distribute “materials about atheism, agnosticism, and secular humanism” to public school pupils. The release reads:

The Central Florida Freethought Community, a chapter of the Freedom From Religion Foundation, has obtained consent this week from the Orange County (FL) School Board to distribute materials about atheism, agnosticism, and secular humanism to students in public schools. This permission comes after the School Board allowed a group of Christians to distribute Bibles to students on campus during school hours for Religious Freedom Day on January 16. [...]

Books, pamphlets, and brochures from the Freedom From Religion Foundation, American Atheists, and the Secular Student Alliance are on their way today to Central Florida and distribution will begin as soon as the promised written permission is received from the School Board and volunteers are cleared to come on campus. Some items being considered for distribution are “An X-Rated Book: Sex & Obscenity in the Bible,” “Ten Common Myths About Atheists,” as well as literature about starting student led secular organizations on campus and books by atheists Dan Barker and Madalyn Murray O’Hair among others.

In the release, Williamson condemned “Biblical literalists” for convincing the school board to allow their religious materials in the school. He claimed that Christians are making schools “a religious battleground of sorts.” To create a balance, the atheist leader said his group will counter “religious propaganda” with their own materials.

FOX 35 News Orlando

Under the district’s rules, outside groups — believing and non-believing, alike — are invited to hand out faith-based materials. However, representatives of various organizations are not allowed to have contact with students. They can, however, setup a table and leave the materials for consumption. Information that includes pornographic material and references that tout tobacco, alcohol and drugs will not be allowed.

Considering these banned subjects, the FFRF’s book, “An X-Rated Book: Sex & Obscenity in the Bible,” will likely raise the ire of critics. The title alone leads one to wonder if the contents will render it unacceptable. » Read More
